New York Dos and Don’ts

Dear Sam,

I am super excited by the fact that I can say in two weeks we are going to New York! (Cue Jay-Z and Alicia Keys)

Also exciting, it’s  your first time!

I love New York. There is just something about the #feels of it that really makes you feel alive. Okay, maybe that’s a bit too much, but hopefully you’ll get what I mean 14 days from now.

Seeing as it is your first time, I feel obliged to give you some tips or rules you should follow.

Do: Gain a kilo.

It has been said before but calories do not count when on a holiday. The NY experience will not be complete if you don’t try to stuff your face with pizza and bagels. (and donuts, cake, etc.)

How many times have you bought a New York Cheesecake Gu pot? Now you can have the reeeeeeeal one. And the one from Juniors is the best.

Levain Bakery – yes, that is a cookie.

Don’t: Get run over by tourists in the middle of Time Square

Right in the heart of all the big lights and billboards, is one of the most Instagrammable spot of the city that never sleeps. We’ve all seen this, the one with a yellow cab in the shot and a sign of some broadway show in the background. However tempting to just stand in the middle and not care as you’re taking selfies, please be mindful of surroundings.

Do: Watch a Broadway show

You know I love my musicals! And when it comes to great musicals, New York is spoilt for choice. (But so are we in London, really.) Last time in the city, my best friend and I splashed out to watch Lion King and it was amazing! I wonder which show I should drag you in to?

Don’t: Try to visit all museums

Well unless you’re a museum buff, then by all means. I mean, it’s always hard to decide which one to go.But if you are going to have to pick one, the iconic Met Museum is the way to go.

Do: Explore (And make new friends)

I will start sounding like a broken record but please go on free walking tours. They are the best way to explore any city.  New York has plenty to choose from! I also booked myself in a couple of Viator tours that were amazing and great for value. I did about four tours on my own the last time and each time would end up having a group to have drinks/pizza with after.

Do: Go on a ferry ride

IMG_6013.JPGIMG_6001.JPGIt is a great way to see the city in a different way!

Don’t: Miss out on the Statue of Liberty

IMG_6084.JPG

Like the Eiffel Tower is to Paris and Big Ben to London, the Statue of Liberty is that to the Big Apple. You would never go to Paris and not see the Eiffel Tower, would you?  Even if you have been there twice.

P.S. If you forget how to hail a cab, just look at this beaut.

Don’t: Think that the Flat Iron is a Steak house.

But, Do: See it.

It’s been called one of the world’s most iconic skyscrapers and a quintessential symbol of New York City

Do: Go to Central Park

I love this park!! Jazz music playing everywhere, paintings displayed by artists, the different sections–there is just so much to it.

Don’t: Go up the Empire State Building for the view

But, Do: Go up the Rockefeller (It’s way better)

I can go on and on and on but I would like to leave some element of surprise for you.

Hoping you’re as excited as I am,

Isabel
